Marley and Mia

After a few months of consideration, by Memorial Day weekend we decided we were ready to add to our “family”.  We already have two kids, Adam (11) and Autumn (9), and we have two previously-adopted Start cats, Madison (14) and Mickey (5).  But somehow, we all knew it was time … we wanted a baby in our house again!  We knew that the sweet playfulness of a little kitten would add a new kind of joy to our household!

We headed to the adoption at Petco.  After spending quite a while with all of the kitties, I realized we didn’t really click with any of them.  My kids were so upset.  We were told about two kittens that weren’t there but could be brought over.  As soon as we saw and held Charlie, we knew he belonged with us.  We ended up renaming him Marley because all of our cats start with the letter “M”.

Before we even got home, there was a message on my machine from Marley’s foster mom.  She recognized my name.  I was a Start volunteer before I had children, and 13 years ago I fostered a kitten she had adopted.  We knew this couldn’t have been a better fit.  How amazing it is that years ago she adopted my foster kitten and now, I just adopted hers.

Marley was ten weeks old and more fun and playful than I ever remember a kitten could be!  He played with anything that moved … especially Madison and Mickey’s tails.  While they were good about tolerating Marley, they weren’t as excited as we were about all the activity from our happy little kitten.  All the new energy Marley brought to our home was very entertaining, to say the least!

My family did the best we could, playing with Marley every chance we had, trying to tire him out, but as soon as we would stop, he’d jump all over the older two!  Five weeks later, we realized what Marley needed.  His own kitten … a ‘friend’ to join him in all his happy, silly mischief!

Back to Petco, where Kym remembered me right away.  She immediately took Mimi out of her cage and put her in my daughter’s arms.  Mimi started to purr.  I said we should consider holding someone else, just to be sure.  But we didn’t.  We knew.  And her name already started with “M”!! (though we changed it to Mia)

Madison, Mickey, and Marley accepted Mia immediately.  Mia fit right in!!  She was exploring the entire house the first day.  And the best part?  Marley doesn’t really bother Madison or Mickey anymore!  In fact, they all have fun together now!

It wasn’t easy, making the decision to adopt a fourth kitty, but our family now fits together perfectly.  Marley & Mia bring a whole new energy to our house … and even our older cats are joining in on the fun these days!  Madison & Mickey have perked up in a whole new way, so it’s been a very happy experience for everyone in our home!

Thank you
