Pet Companions
Does your Pet need a Friend?
If you are looking for a companion for a feline you may already have, please consider enhancing the life of one of our felines that may not have a good chance of being adopted based on it’s shy, bashful, or introverted personality.
Placement of sociable cats and kittens is easy, however S.T.A.R.T. occasionally has hard to place cats which we like to call “Pet Companions”. These cats and kittens love to be in the company of other cats or animals and need that companionship to survive. They just don't need the total one-on-one attention from a human. These feline friends are not feral but may not like to be held or snuggled and may get nervous in different situations. But these poor felines need a loving caring home.
Because S.T.A.R.T does not have a shelter, these animals are in the care of our foster homes. We can tell you the personalities of these animals and what you can expected after a short transition period. Please think about opening your heart and home to one of our Pet Companions. It may be the best thing you ever do for your feline that needs a friend! If you would like more information about our Pet Companion prorgram, please call ore email us at 973-785-1245 or startadoptions@aol.com
SO YOU WANT TO ADOPT A PET? Here are some frequently asked questions that should help you understand how we do our adoptions.
IF I AM INTERESTED IN ADOPTING A PET, WHAT'S MY FIRST STEP?
The first step is to complete and send the pre-adoption application below. PLEASE REMEMBER that an incomplete application form will disqualify you from our review of your application.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Our S.T.A.R.T. adoption counselors will review your application, proceed with your vet and personal reference checks, and if all goes will, they will contact you to discuss your application and to arrange for you to meet the pet you are interested in. This process takes time, so please be patient.
WILL I BE CONTACTED IF S.T.A.R.T. DOES NOT FEEL I AM QUALIFIED?
Yes, with the exception of applications that are under age (21) or out of state, all FULLY COMPLETED pre-adoption applications will be reviewed and notified. Please understand this is not an interrogation! Our goal is very simple—to find the best home for each and every animal in our foster care! Please do not be insulted if the process does not have the outcome you expect. This is a tough process for us, and we do not intentionally mean to convey ill feelings.
WHAT IS YOUR ADOPTION FEE?
Our adoption fee for an adult cat or kitten is $120.00; adult dog or puppy $175.00.
WHAT AGE DOES A PET HAVE TO BE BEFORE I ADOPT THEM?
Both canines and felines will be 10 weeks of age orr older.
WHAT IF I WANT TO MAKE A COMMITTMENT TO ANIMAL SOONER?
Prior to 10 weeks, you may be pre-qualified for adoption of an animal too young to release. This means that we will ‘hold’ the animal in our care until the proper age of release. Once you have completed the pre-adoption process and are approved, you will be required to give a $75.00 non-refundable deposit to hold an animal.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE ADOPTION FEE?
All animals coming into our care receive an immediate full veterinarian check-up. Felines are tested for FELV/FIV, canines are tested for heartworm. All animals have their appropriate vaccinations (distemper and rabies, providing the animal is old enough for one or both), fecal test, wormed, spayed or neutered (if over 10 weeks), treated for fleas/ticks and ear mites and micro-chipped.
WHAT IF MY ANIMAL IS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO ALTER?
Your adoption fee includes the altering of your animal. If the animal is too young, arrangements will be made by your adoption counselor to have the animal altered at our veterinarian when he/she is the appropriate age. This date will be explained and listed on your adoption contract.
WHAT IF I WANT TO USE MY VET, WILL S.T.A.R.T. STILL PAY?
NO. Because our vet works with us to keep our costs down, we must insist that you use our veterinarian for altering. If you chose to use your veterinarian, there will be no refund for your expenses. If you chose to use your own vet, a certificate of spay/neuter MUST BE RECEIVED in our office no later than 30-days after the date to be altered on your adoption contract.
